Pessoa Lunging Aid
The Pessoa Lunging Aid is a wonderful way to teach horses young and old how to properly reach for the contact to the bit while lifting their backs. This Pessoa lunging aid is adjustable so that you can set it for the particular development of the horse. For example, when working with a green or young horse it can be set to go “long and low”, and progressively be adjusted throughout their development to increased levels of collection. The hindquarter strap is made out of fleece and gently encourages the horse to go on to the bit contact rather than the horse improperly flexing behind the bit.
When should I use this?
We first recommend that the horse be taught to walk, trot, and canter, on a lunge line. The horse should be thoroughly adjusted to the bit and bridle, and also recommended that it had been lunged quietly in a surcingle prior. This will help make the transition easier. It is also recommended that the horse be desensitized to pressure, and things touching the horse’s hindquarters. This is so that you can safely put the Pessoa Lunging Aid on and off without the horse becoming startled or spooked. It’s recommended to start out on a looser setting allowing the horse to stretch into the contact rather than starting with a too restrictive setting.
Why should I use a Pessoa Lunging Aid?
The Pessoa Lunging Aid is said by some trainers to be a great way to teach the horse to lift their back and start to build strengthening muscles to carry a rider, or develop carrying power for advanced stages of collection. We have also heard riders who are rehabbing horses with kissing spine use this, although we always recommend consulting your vet in these situations before use. It’s also used to “re-start” horse that may be recovering from injury or time off that are not yet ready to have a rider, or used in between rides. As it has a lot of adjustability it’s impossible to list all of the intended uses here however it’s a great training aid to have in your tack room. It is designed to help the horse to find it’s own natural balance and rhythm.
Headstall (bridle), lunge line, surcingle and saddle pad not included.
