A good fit

  • The noseband sits about two fingers below the cheekbone, with room for two fingers under it.
  • Too low can press on the soft part of the nose. Too loose can catch a hoof.
  • You can fit a fist at the throat.
  • Measuring: the easiest way is to compare with a halter that fits now. Measure around the nose, and from cheek ring to cheek ring over the poll.
  • For turnout or tying, a breakaway halter is the safer choice.

Questions, answered

What size halter do I need?

Most average horses wear a Horse (Full) size. Arabians and small horses usually wear Cob or Yearling, ponies wear Pony, and warmbloods and drafts need Large Horse, Oversize or Draft. Compare the measurements with your current halter.

Why a breakaway halter?

A breakaway halter has a leather crown or tab that breaks under strong pressure, so a horse that gets caught while tied or turned out can free itself. Replacement crowns are sold separately.

How should a halter fit?

The noseband sits about two fingers below the cheekbone with room for two fingers under it, and you can fit a fist at the throat. Too loose can catch a hoof, and too low can press on the soft part of the nose.

Can I return it?

Yes. Regularly priced items can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of purchase if they are new and unused, with original tags and packaging (domestic orders, $30 minimum). Sale and discounted items are final sale. See our Shipping & Returns page for details.
