  • Measure the widest part of your riding boot sole and add about 1".
  • That leaves about 1/2" on each side, so your foot can slip out easily in a fall. Too small can trap the foot. Too big lets it slide through.
  • Check that the eye fits your leathers. Most irons take leathers up to 1" or 1-1/4" wide.

Questions, answered

What size stirrup iron do I need?

Measure the widest part of your riding boot sole and add about 1". That leaves about 1/2" on each side, so your foot can slip out easily in a fall. Most adults ride in 4-3/4" irons.

Which safety stirrups are best?

Safety irons help free your foot in a fall. Peacock irons have a breakaway rubber band, side-opening irons open under pressure, and curved or sculpted irons let the foot slide out. Peacock irons are a popular first choice for kids.

Are flex stirrups worth it?

Flex and shock-absorbing irons give a little under your foot. That takes strain off your knees and ankles and makes it easier to keep your heels down.

Can I return it?

Yes. Regularly priced items can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of purchase if they are new and unused, with original tags and packaging (domestic orders, $30 minimum). Sale and discounted items are final sale. See our Shipping & Returns page for details.

How fast does it ship?
