Bit sizing and cheek types

CheekWhat it does
Loose ringRings move freely, encouraging the horse to mouth the bit.
Eggbutt / D-ringFixed cheeks hold the bit steady and help prevent pinching.
Full cheekHelps with steering. Use bit loops to keep the cheeks upright.
GagThe bit slides up when you use the rein, adding poll pressure.
Pelham / kimberwickSnaffle plus curb action with a curb chain.
HackamoreBitless: pressure on the nose, chin and poll.

Measuring for a bit

  • Mouth width: measure your horse's mouth corner to corner with a bit measure or string, or measure your current bit inside the cheeks.
  • A snaffle should show about 1/4" each side. Give a loose ring a little more so it doesn't pinch.
  • Thickness: measured at the cheek. Thicker isn't always gentler: horses with low palates or fleshy tongues often prefer a thinner bit.

Every horse is different. Not sure which bit to try? Use Ask a question and we'll help.

Questions, answered

How do I measure my horse for a bit?

Measure your horse's mouth corner to corner with a bit measure or a piece of string, or measure your current bit inside the cheeks. A snaffle should show about 1/4" on each side.

What's the difference between bit cheeks?

Loose rings move and encourage mouthing, eggbutt and D-ring cheeks hold the bit steady, full cheeks help with steering, and gags, pelhams and kimberwicks add leverage.

Why copper or sweet iron?

Both encourage the horse to salivate and accept the bit. Sweet iron is meant to rust a little, which gives it a taste many horses like.

Can I return it?

Yes. Regularly priced items can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of purchase if they are new and unused, with original tags and packaging (domestic orders, $30 minimum). Sale and discounted items are final sale. See our Shipping & Returns page for details.
