Bit sizing and cheek types
| Cheek | What it does |
|---|---|
| Loose ring | Rings move freely, encouraging the horse to mouth the bit. |
| Eggbutt / D-ring | Fixed cheeks hold the bit steady and help prevent pinching. |
| Full cheek | Helps with steering. Use bit loops to keep the cheeks upright. |
| Gag | The bit slides up when you use the rein, adding poll pressure. |
| Pelham / kimberwick | Snaffle plus curb action with a curb chain. |
| Hackamore | Bitless: pressure on the nose, chin and poll. |
Measuring for a bit
- Mouth width: measure your horse's mouth corner to corner with a bit measure or string, or measure your current bit inside the cheeks.
- A snaffle should show about 1/4" each side. Give a loose ring a little more so it doesn't pinch.
- Thickness: measured at the cheek. Thicker isn't always gentler: horses with low palates or fleshy tongues often prefer a thinner bit.
Every horse is different. Not sure which bit to try? Use Ask a question and we'll help.
Questions, answered
Do I need bit loops?
Yes, with a full cheek bit. They keep the cheeks upright so they don't catch on anything.
What does a bit converter do?
It joins the snaffle and curb rings of a pelham so you can ride with one set of reins.
How tight should a curb chain be?
You should be able to fit two fingers between the chain and the chin groove when the bit is at rest.
Can I return it?
No. For hygiene reasons, bit accessories and curb chains are not eligible for return or exchange. Please check sizes before you order, and use Ask a question if you are not sure what fits. See our Shipping & Returns page for details.
How fast does it ship?
Order by 11 am CST and it ships within 48 business hours. Add an item to your cart and enter your ZIP to see delivery time and cost.
