How to measure for riding boots

  • Height (1): sit with your knee bent at 90 degrees, wearing thin riding socks and breeches. Measure from the floor up the back of your leg to the bend of your knee. New tall boots should be about 1/2" to 1" taller than this, because leather drops as it breaks in.
  • Calf (2): measure around the widest part of your calf, sitting, in your riding socks and breeches. Compare it with the brand's calf width for each size: normal, wide or extra wide.
  • Foot: order your usual shoe size. European sizes are listed with the US size on each product page.
  • Laces and gussets (3): lace-front field boots and elastic gussets give a little extra room to fine tune the fit and flex at the ankle.
  • Paddock and jodhpur boots are sized like everyday shoes. Pair them with half chaps for the look of a tall boot.
  • Muck and rain boots are for the barn and the yard, not for riding.

How should tall boots fit when new?
