A good fit
- Bit height: adjust the cheeks so the bit makes one or two soft wrinkles at the corners of the mouth.
- Curb strap: you should fit two fingers between the strap and the chin.
- Throatlatch: leave about four fingers of room so your horse can flex and breathe.
- One ear: the ear loop sits around the base of one ear without pinching.
- Measuring: measure bit to bit, from one bit ring over the poll to the other, or compare with a headstall that fits now.

What is a noseband used for?
A Western noseband is usually paired with a tie-down: clip the tie-down to the ring under the chin to limit how high your horse can raise its head. A cavesson keeps the mouth quiet.
How should a noseband fit?
It should sit about two fingers below the cheekbone, snug enough not to slide, with room for two fingers underneath.
Leather or rope?
Flat leather is the softest feel. Rope nosebands give a firmer, more precise cue, so start a little looser and adjust as needed.
