A good fit
- Bit height: adjust the cheeks so the bit makes one or two soft wrinkles at the corners of the mouth.
- Curb strap: you should fit two fingers between the strap and the chin.
- Throatlatch: leave about four fingers of room so your horse can flex and breathe.
- One ear: the ear loop sits around the base of one ear without pinching.
- Measuring: measure bit to bit, from one bit ring over the poll to the other, or compare with a headstall that fits now.

Questions, answered
Will a one ear headstall stay on?
Yes. The ear loop goes around one ear and holds the crown in place, and the throatlatch keeps it secure. Make sure the loop is not pinching the base of the ear.
How do I measure for a headstall?
Measure bit to bit: start at one bit ring, go up the cheek, over the poll and down to the other bit ring. Compare that with the bit-to-bit range on the listing, or measure a headstall that fits your horse now.
One ear or double ear?
A one ear headstall has a single loop for one ear. A double ear headstall has a loop for each ear for a little more stability and a classic show look.
