Answered by The Connected RiderMatch the pad to your saddle. A dressage pad is longer with a deeper drop to sit under the long, straight flaps of a dressage saddle. An all purpose pad is shorter and cut further forward for all purpose and jumping saddles.

How do I keep the pad off the withers?

Answered by The Connected RiderBefore you girth up, push your hand under the front of the pad and lift it up into the gullet of the saddle so it isn’t pulled tight over the withers.

Saddle pad shapes and sizing

Shape	Made for
All purpose	All purpose and jumping saddles. Shorter, cut further forward.
Dressage	Dressage saddles with long, straight flaps. Longer, with a deeper drop.
Jumping / close contact	Forward-flap jumping saddles. Shaped to follow the flap.
Half pad	Goes over your saddle pad, under the saddle, for extra cushion or to level the saddle.
Pony	Smaller pads sized for pony saddles.

Measuring a pad

Spine: along the top edge, front to back.
Drop: from the spine straight down to the bottom edge.
Pick a pad that shows an inch or two all around the saddle.
Lift the pad up into the gullet before you girth up so it doesn't press on the withers.
