Questions & answers
What mouthpiece size do I need?
Answered by The Connected RiderMost horses take a 5″ mouthpiece. Arabians and smaller horses often need 4 3/4″, and big-headed horses 5 1/4″ to 5 1/2″. Measure across the mouth at the corners, or check the size stamped on your current bit.
What does the level mean?
Answered by The Connected RiderCowboy Tack sorts its bits into five levels to help you match a bit to your horse’s stage of training, from Level One for horses early in training to Level Five for finished horses. If you are not sure which level fits, use Ask a question.
Do I need a curb strap?
Answered by The Connected RiderYes. Shanked bits need a curb strap or chain to work correctly. Adjust it so you can fit two fingers between the strap and the chin.
Why sweet iron and copper?
Answered by The Connected RiderSweet iron oxidizes to a warm, sweet taste and copper encourages salivation, which helps a horse accept and soften to the bit. Light rust on sweet iron is normal and part of how it works.
