How to choose Western stirrups

• Tread width (1): 1" to 2" treads give close contact for roping, cutting and reining. 2" to 3" is a good all-around choice. 3" to 4" treads spread pressure for trail and endurance riding.
• Inside width (2): measure your boot across the widest part of the sole. Allow a little room on each side so your foot can slide out easily, but not so much that it can slip through.
• Inside height (3): taller openings suit boots with a deep heel or a thick sole. Oversized stirrups help with packers and winter boots.
• Overall height (4): a taller stirrup hangs lower, so you may need to shorten your fenders a hole when you switch styles.
• Angled and swivel stirrups let the foot rest flatter and can ease knee and ankle strain. Breakaway and hooded stirrups add a layer of safety for young or nervous riders.
