How to choose a Western saddle size
Seat size (1) fits the rider. Sit in a chair with your back against the backrest and your feet flat, then measure from the back of your knee to the front of your buttocks.
| Thigh measurement | Seat size |
|---|---|
| Under 18 1/2" | 13" |
| 18 1/2" to 20" | 14" |
| 20" to 21 1/2" | 15" |
| 21 1/2" to 23 1/2" | 16" |
| Over 23 1/2" | 17" |
- Gullet and swell (5–7) fit the horse. A 6 1/2" to 7" gullet fits many average-width horses. Wide or flat-backed horses usually need 7 1/2" or wider, and narrow, high-withered horses need less. You should be able to fit two to three fingers between the withers and the gullet with a rider in the saddle.
- Horn (2) and cantle (3): a taller cantle holds you deeper in the seat. A shorter horn and low cantle make it easier to move, which is why barrel and speed saddles often have them.
- Skirt (4): round and short skirts suit short-backed horses and barrel saddles. Square skirts spread weight over a longer area for trail and ranch work.
- Measurements vary by seat size. The measurements on each product page are for the size listed by the manufacturer.

Questions, answered
What seat size do I need?
Sit in a chair and measure from the back of your knee to the front of your buttocks. Under 18 1/2" is a 13" seat, 18 1/2" to 20" a 14", 20" to 21 1/2" a 15", 21 1/2" to 23 1/2" a 16", and over 23 1/2" a 17".
How do I know the saddle will fit my horse?
Check the gullet width on the product page. With a rider in the saddle you should fit two to three fingers between the withers and the gullet, and the saddle should sit level without rocking or bridging.
What comes in a saddle package?
Packages include the pieces listed on the product page, usually a headstall, reins, a cinch or girth and a saddle pad or blanket. Package pieces may vary in color and style from the photo.

Yes. Regularly priced items can be returned or exchanged within 30 days of purchase if they are new and unused, with original tags and packaging (domestic orders, $30 minimum). Sale and discounted items are final sale. See our Shipping & Returns page for details.
